Rajeswara Rao was born in 1960 in Vizianagaram. He earned a BFA in 1983 from Andhra University. He got his MFA in 1990 from Hyderabad Central University.
People have been my muses – always. The labyrinth of external resources – superficial – amazes me. I soak up the pleasures, desires, and needs of the people around me. I celebrate their appearances and happiness. I admire their courage to flaunt themselves. They thrash their inhibitions to fit into high society. Pretensions are a need here that alternate into a necessity. I am concerned with the ‘high’ of these pretensions. What if, over time, one lost oneself in a muddle of confusion? That would be a completely different canvas – at another time.
I am like a mediator – a facilitator between the situation and the people in it. Using my photographic memory, I execute the snapshot with precision. I avoid storytelling and a formal narrative.
I am fascinated by a new aesthetic. It stems from illiterate landlords, flashy TV shows, and pros who lost their village roots. Young men and women, eager to fit into the ‘elite,’ are gullible and desperate for change. Consumerism is amusing, not frightening. It’s due to a need for the unnecessary and a compulsion to change.
Their raw passion intoxicates me. I want to explore their bodies and, a bit, their hedonistic minds. In turn, I indulge in their excess. It is completely Indian.
Acrylic color on acrylic sheet is the medium. Rajeswara Rao have completed the drawing. They apply, roll, and scratch the color. The painting is now complete on the acrylic sheet. A paper is then added, enabling dimension, volume, and luminosity to the work. This is a reverse painting. It is a modern take on the ancient Tanjore glass painting.
