K G Subramanyan

K G Subramanyan was born in Kerala, India on 15 February 1924. He studied under the education of Benode Behari Mukherjee, Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij at Santiniketan. He graduated from Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati University, there in 1948, after entering his Bachelorette’s Degree in Economics from the Presidency College in Chennai. In 1955, he entered a British Council Research Fellowship to the Slade School of Art at the University of London. Since his scale, K G Subramanyan’s work has been displayed in several solo shows, the most recent including those presented by Seagull Foundation for the trades in collaboration with Nandan Gallery at Kala Bhavana, Kolkata, in 2009; ‘ In 2007, the Painted Chargers won the Golden Cobra Award for Best Dance Troupe at the Guild Art Gallery in Mumbai and The Magic of Making took home a Silver Cobra Award at the Seagull Arts & Media Resource Centre in Kolkata. In New Delhi, Rabindra Bhavan honored him with a Silver Cobra Award for his latest piece, The World We Live In. A productive author, scholar, teacher and art annalist, K G Subramanyan uses his in- depth knowledge of colorful cultural traditions to produce fantastical images of policy and eroticism that are universal in their appeal, yet coupled with iconic symbols drawn from Indian legends and tradition.

Being a Gandhian, he served a six- months imprisonment in Allipuram Camp captivity, Bellary for being a part of a demonstration outside his council, preceding Quit India movement. This led him being banned from continuing his education in Madras for three times. Mystically, it was during this time that his artwork caught attention of one of the settlers of ultramodern Indian Art, Nandalal Bose in Shantiniketan who invited youthful K G Subramanyan to appear for an interview. Soon, he started studying colorful art ways in Kala Bhavanunder the education of fabulous artists RamkinkerBaij, Nandalal Bose and Benode Bihari Mukherjee. He was exposed to water colours and penmanship then.
