K G Subramanyan

Kalpathi Ganpathi Subramanyan, also known as KG Subramanyan, was born in 1924 in a village in north Kerala, India. He was a very important artist in India after the country became independent. He was also deeply involved in India’s struggle for independence. at the time subramanyan started by studying economics at Presidency College in Chennai.

Because of his active participation, he ended up in jail. After his release, he couldn’t attend government colleges anymore. So, he decided to pursue art and enrolled at Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan. There, he learned from renowned teachers and finished his studies in 1948.

In 1951, he started teaching at the Faculty of Fine Arts at M.S. University in Baroda. Later, in 1956, he got a scholarship to study more about art in London at the Slade School of Art.

In 1966, he got a special opportunity from the Rockefeller Foundation to go to New York. While he was there, he had to paint on smaller canvases because of limited space.

He returned to Santiniketan in 1980 to teach painting and continued teaching there until he retired in 1989. Even after retiring, he was made a professor at Visva Bharati University.

Subramanyan liked to mix different styles in his art. He used ideas from European modern art and Indian folk art. Subramanyan was super talented in lots of types of art! He could paint, create big murals, sculpt, make prints, design sets for plays or movies, and he even made toys!

He especially liked to paint women, children, objects, and animals. Over time, his paintings focused more on objects as forms, using bright colors and abstract shapes.

His artwork often featured strong black lines similar to those seen in the works of famous artists like Pablo Picasso. His paintings are known for showing sensuality, using dark backgrounds, and having thoughtful expressions on the faces he painted. He often used myths, memories, and traditions in his art, adding a touch of humor and playfulness.

Subramanyan had lots of art shows just for his work. One big show was from 2015 to 2016, and it was in important galleries in Mumbai and Kolkata. He also won many awards for his art, especially from the Government of India.

He was given the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan awards. These were significant awards bestowed upon him by the Indian government in recognition of his extraordinary artistic contributions.

He spent his last years in Baroda with his daughter and passed away in June 2016 when he was 92 years old. KG Subramanyan was a very special artist who helped shape Indian art after India became free.
