Umakant Kanade was born on 14th March 1949 in Mumbai, India. His parents, from Pune, are Maharashtrians. He spent his childhood in Kolhapur. There, he studied at St. Xavier’s High School. Then, he moved to New York City. He completed his education at Pratt Institute of Design. After that, he returned home for an internship at Mehul Choksi’s studio from 1969 to 1971. There, he learned painting techniques under Choksi. Next, he went to Paris. He studied fine arts under Gerard Lavier and Jean-Paul Desroches de Blois. They taught him easel painting techniques used by oil painters.
