Thota Laxminarayana

Artist Thota Laxminarayana experiments on his canvas. He uses a stylized vocabulary, rooted in Indian folk art, to modernize the rural idiom. He creates visual challenges in his art, without losing his environment’s essence. His paintings of serene folk use an exceptional economy of lines. Although portrayed in a vibrant palette, the color scheme remains subtle and well-coordinated. As each of his paintings is a social documentary of rural life, the spectator never gets bored. The plants and animals show that green lives coexist with nature.

Born in 1973, Nirmal, Adilabad District, Telangana. Thota Laxminarayana, a student of Guruji-Shri Ravinder Sharma, blends folk art with a modern style. Guruji is a revered name in art and design schools.

Cultural Impact of His Artwork

He draws the calm folk in his paintings with few lines. They use a vibrant palette, but the colors are subtle and well-coordinated. His spectators never find a dull moment as each canvas is a social documentary of country life. Humans living in harmony with plants and animals show green lives. They are a sign of a healthy environment.

I try to modernize the rural idiom. I use a stylized vocabulary with deep roots in the Indian folk tradition. I capture cultural documents in my works, without diluting my environment. I create the serene-appearing folks in my paintings using a rich matrix of lines. Though vivid, the colors in my work are very modern.

It is never a dull moment when viewing my paintings, as each is a social documentary. I also show humans coexisting with the flora and fauna. They are signs of green lives in harmony. But lately, after my shift to the city, I have depicted the urban settlement with my rural sentiments. – Thota Laxminarayana
