He is particularly interested in the paintings of the Nathdwara School of Painting. He wrote a book titled “Krishna as Shrinathji – Rajasthani Paintings from Nathdwara.” Mapin published it in 1987. In 1989, he held a display of Nathdwara paintings from his collection in New Delhi. It was part of an exhibition he had organized. Watercolor was the primary medium of Amit Ambalal’s work. Watercolors are his favorite medium. They inform you when a painting is complete. They also provide a unique transparency not found in other media. Amit Ambalal, an artist, is well known for his use of pure colors on paper. He works with pure colors rather than using palettes to combine them.

His work can be divided into two main categories. One has a contemporary approach to tradition via popular religious traditions. The other is the historical Rajasthani Nathdwara devotional paintings. He has been creating them for the last 14 years. Part of his work also revolves around human drama.

In 1999, he got the Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellowship in Italy. In 1968, he won the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi Award.

Galleries across India showcase his work on a regular basis. Meanwhile, several international group exhibitions have introduced his art to global audiences. His reach extends from local shows to foreign venues. He still considers himself a student. This is despite over 40 solo and group exhibitions featuring his work. He lives and works in Ahmedabad.
