Bhaskara Rao Botcha

Bhaskara Rao Botcha is a Hyderabad artist. His works, inspired by nature, focus on trees. The artist reimagines trees in many mediums, colors, and styles. He revisits his muse with a new vision in each painting. Rao got his BFA in Painting from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, in 1999. He earned his MFA in Painting from the University of Hyderabad in 2001.

His early experimentation with figurative and street art led Rao to natural landscapes. They, in turn, led to an interest in trees. They became his leitmotif, the cornerstone of his work as a professional artist. Bhaskara Rao loves trees. His childhood in Salur, a small town in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, is the reason. He has warm memories of the time his father took him to plant a mango tree on their farm of cashews and mangoes. Young Rao frequented the fields to see the mango tree grow.

Bhaskara Rao Journey

The journey kindled his innocent, growing love for nature. Trees are vital to the ecosystem. Bhaskara Rao considers them sacred cultural symbols. Indian mythology says that trees, or ‘vrikshas’, are the offspring of Anala. The great sage Kashyapa married Anala. Trees not only yield fruits, but also provide shade and cover, and protect the earth’s surface. Rao’s artworks remind us of our spiritual bond with trees. He worries about the harm we cause to nature in our haste to progress.

An instinctive artist, Bhaskara Rao Botcha, paints layer by layer. He does not pre-plan the scene or its effect. He stops when he is happy with the result. His work shows his dynamic process. The trees come alive on his canvases, with grand depth and realism. Rao achieves this using acrylic, layers of elaborate textures, and imaginative color schemes. His paintings, contrary to the expected greens, are often bold. They use primary colors, black, white, or even somber grays. They detail information in an elaborate manner.

Bhaskara Rao had solo shows at Icon Art Gallery, Hyderabad, in 2012 and 2013. He also showed at The International Artist Salon of A.R.T, Taiwan, from 2017 to 2019. He has also participated in more than 60 group shows across India and also in the UAE, Taiwan, and Germany.
