Akbar Padamsee, a master in his 90s, has boundless energy. He is one of India’s top contemporary artists. Born in 1928 to a wealthy Muslim family in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, he studied painting at Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. In 1951, he went to Paris. He started painting for Atelier 17, a studio of Surrealist artist Stanley Hayter. He soon held his first show at Galerie Saint Placide in 1952. He had his very first solo show in Jehangir Art Gallery in 1954. He is a close associate of the Progressive Artists Group (PAG). He sought to learn about art outside India. So, he worked with several organizations abroad. He returned to India in 1967.

Yet, he was aware of every creation and the process involved in creating a masterpiece. He was among the first modern artists to boost India’s modernist art movement. A strong influence of form, volume, space, time, and color drove his work. He was very conscious of every contemplation and articulation of thoughts and ideas.
