The technicolor landscapes of artist Sumanto Chowdhury are a feast for the eyes. They are filled with candy-colored homes, emerald hills, red earth, and pastel skies. His work shows the influence of Indian miniature painting. It is evident in his attention to detail, like ornate fences and patterned tiles. Also, his canvases have a strong visual depth. The scenes suggest a vibrant Indian utopia. People and nature live in harmony there.
He is inspired by the lakes, gardens, and buildings of Hyderabad. Art by Sumanto Chowdhury mixes in other references from his travels and memories. The trees of Goa are next to the huts of Telangana. He often uses the gray and white buildings of Santiniketan, where he studied. He explains, “My works do not represent only one place. They merge different architectural styles, human gestures, and local flora and fauna. I try to combine them in one place.”
Sumanto Chowdhury studied Fine Arts in Painting at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan. He then earned his Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of Hyderabad. Galleries have shown his paintings, sculptures, and fine art prints all over India. He has received many awards from the South Zone Cultural Center, and the Prafulla Dahanukar and Aranya art foundations.
