Manu Parekh

Manu Parekh was born in 1939 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He has a diploma in drawing and painting from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. He earned it in 1962. His early work explored man’s relationship with nature. He believed that we should celebrate it as a vital link. The artist says that, since then, contradictions have guided his art, no matter the subject.

Supported himself by acting on stage in Bombay. Worked as a stage designer in Ahmedabad. Joined Weaver’s Service Centre, Bombay, as an Art Designer in 1963. Consultant for the Handicraft and Handloom Export Corporation of India, 1965-89. He worked in Calcutta, 1965-74, and in Delhi, 1974-89.

Banaras, as a city, came to play an integral role in his work after his first visit there following his father’s death. This holy city of hope, of faith, and of tourists offered him a vast number of contradictions in one location. Parekh also cites two key influences on his art. They are his wife, Madhvi, a self-taught artist, and his admiration for Picasso. In 1968, Manu Parekh had his first solo show of graphics and paintings in Ahmedabad. He has not looked back since.

His most recent solo shows include:

• ‘Banaras – Eternity Watches Time’ (2007) at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. Saffronart and Berkeley Square Gallery, London presented it.

• ‘Banaras’ (2004) at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi.

• ‘Portraits of Flowers and Landscapes of Rivers’ (2003) at the Jehangir and Tao Art Galleries in Mumbai.

• ‘Ritual Oblations’ (1999) at Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi. And at Sakshi and Jehangir galleries, Mumbai.

• ‘Small Drawings’ (1991) at the Sophia Duchesne Art Gallery, Mumbai.

Manu Parekh has also had solo shows at Bose Pacia Modern in New York and at ARKS Gallery in London. In 1972, he won two awards in New Delhi. They were the President of India’s Silver Plaque and the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society Award. In 1982, he won the National Award from the Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi. In 1992, he received the Padma Shri from the Government of India. He lives and works in New Delhi.
