Madhvi Parekh

Madhvi Parekh was born in 1942 in Sanjaya, a village in Gujarat. She is a self taught artist. She explored depicting her childhood memories in her paintings. They weave together images of fantasy and her early days. This gives her work a surreal, dreamlike quality. Her subjects have a freshness and spontaneity to them. Madhvi’s work has its inspiration in rural India, while her style is contemporary. Since 1972, she has shown her work worldwide. She has a record of almost 100 solo and group shows.

While expecting their first child, Parekh’s husband gifted her a drawing book by Paul Klee. Soon, she began to create her own artistic vocabulary. Also, to folk motifs, Parekh uses imaginary, abstract characters. They reveal a use of rhythm and repetition. She often uses the settings of Kalamkari and Pichwai paintings. In them, the main character is in the center, with minor ones at the borders.

Her paintings, with dots, lines, circles, and triangles, are like Paul Klee’s. With fantastical, bulbous creatures, they are like Joan Miró’s. Suraj Purohit made a documentary film titled Dwity about the Parekh couple in 1992. The retrospective on the artist that took place in New Delhi and Mumbai also traveled to New York. The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
