Born on 12 March 1934 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, Jyoti Bhatt studied painting and printmaking at M. S. University, Baroda. Inspired by his mentor, artist K. G. Subramanyan, Bhatt explored the gap between art and craft. In the early 1960s, he got a scholarship to the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples, Italy. Then, he went to the Pratt Institute in New York. He encountered abstract expressionism there. He was also a fellow of the John D. Rockefeller III Fund.
Jyoti Bhatt is an Indian painter, printmaker, and photographer known for colorful works that combine a graphic sensibility with traditional Indian folk design, as well as an extensive archive of photographs of the Indian countryside. A keen experimenter, Bhatt’s early works showed cubist influences. They later shifted to pop-art imagery. Finally, he arrived at a style inspired by traditional folk designs. Bhatt worked in many mediums, including watercolors and oils. But his printmaking got him the most attention.
In the late ’60s, Bhatt began to document traditional Indian craft and design. This started as an assignment for a seminar on Gujarati folk art. It became a lifelong passion. Bhatt considers his documentary photographs to be an art form. His composed photographs have gained value based on their own merit.
A founder member of the Baroda Group of Artists, he was also part of Group 1890. He won the national award of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1963-64. In 1967, he won a gold medal at the International Print Biennale in Florence. In 1972, he won the first prize for designing a stamp for India’s 25th Independence Anniversary. In 2019, he received the Padma Shri from the Government of India. Bhatt lives and works in Vadodara.
