Jamini Roy was born in 1887 in Bengal and attended the Government School of Art in Calcutta from 1906 to 1914. After an initial Post-Impressionist period, he began to be influenced by traditional Bengal folk painting. He exhibited the first in Calcutta in 1929, where he spent most of his working life. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1955. He passed away in 1972.
