Jagdeep Smart, heir to Vasudeo Smart, had an MFA from Maharaja Sayaji Rao University. It was his uncle, the well-known painter Vasudev Smart, a Sir J.J. School of Art graduate. He inspired and encouraged him to explore lines and colors in his work. He was a well-known contemporary artist. He was a popular Fine Arts professor at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University. He also translated M. F. Hussain’s biography.
He published it as ‘Dada no dangoro lidho’. This showcased his skills as a budding poet. He sketched a building in Surat’s Nanpura area in 1986-87. It documents the architecture of a bygone era. A talented hand sketched some old buildings, like the Vohra mansion.
They have given way to new multistory buildings. For 40 years, he had added vibrancy to Surat’s canvas with his popular puppet master’s series. He promoted week-long art festivals for youngsters to display their skills. He had also engaged in a wide range of art workshops with Bhupen Khakar at Nathdwara. He had developed the fine arts and interior design courses for VNSGU over the last three years.
Jagdeep Smart Paintings had won several awards for his work, including: the Kalidas Academy Award, Ujjain; three from the Gujarat Lalit Kala Academy; a UNICEF painting award; a Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy award for Best Drawing Artist; and an award from the Giant Group of Greater Surat for Outstanding Personality in the Field of Fine Arts. He did several shows across India, including a one-man show at Jahangir Art Gallery.
Jagdeep Smart also exhibited his works at three galleries. The galleries are: the Jehangir in Mumbai, the Herwitz in Ahmedabad, and the Anant in Surat. He also organised a special show – Ma – dedicated to his mother at the Rotary Art Gallery, Surat.
